A magnitude of 4.2 earthquake and multiple aftershocks occurred near Malibu in the Los Angeles area on Wednesday morning.
The US Geological Survey reported that the initial quake happened 10 miles south of Malibu Beach at 2 a.m. PST and had a depth of 9.2 miles. Following the 4.2 earthquake, about three minutes later, a magnitude 3.5 aftershock was reported near the same location with a depth of 8 miles.
Two more aftershocks, with magnitudes of 2.8 and 2.6, occurred at 2:22 a.m. and 2:38 a.m. PST respectively. The Los Angeles Fire Department conducted a survey of the city stating “No damage or injuries were reported and normal operational mode has resumed.”.
The Los Angeles area is known for its high seismic activity and residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during earthquakes. This includes having an emergency plan in place, keeping emergency supplies on hand, and knowing how to turn off gas and water valves.

The USGS states that damage is not typically reported unless the earthquake magnitude is greater than 4 or 5.
The Los Angeles Fire Department also recommends that residents sign up for emergency alerts to stay informed of any potential threats.
The USGS is requesting that anyone who felt the earthquakes on Wednesday morning to submit a report on their website.
